Should I mirror self-adhesive vinyl when cutting, and why not?

No, mirroring is not necessary. Unlike Flex Film (HTV), vinyl film is cut directly on the color side (the visible side). Therefore, you do not need to mirror the design in your cutting software; it should be cut and weeded as it is meant to look.

Why is Application Tape necessary for vinyl?

Application tape is essential because when cutting vinyl, you cut the visible side, and the adhesive side remains on the carrier sheet. After weeding, the entire design, including all individual components, must be lifted in one piece from the carrier to be transferred and aligned correctly on the final surface. The application tape performs this crucial function.

What tools do I need for working with vinyl?

In addition to the plotter, the following tools are critical for achieving a clean result:
Application Tape: For design transfer.
Weeding Tool: For precisely removing excess vinyl.
Squeegee: For thoroughly pressing the vinyl onto the surface and removing air bubbles.

Use a squeegee with a felt edge. The felt prevents direct contact between the hard squeegee material and the vinyl surface, drastically reducing the chance of scratches, even when applying firm pressure.

Why does weeding (removing excess vinyl) sometimes become difficult?

This problem usually occurs when the cutter blade is set too deep. If the blade cuts through the silicone coating of the carrier sheet, the vinyl adhesive can bond to the carrier, making weeding extremely difficult. Always ensure your blade depth is set to cut only the vinyl layer, not the carrier.

Should I prepare the surface before applying the vinyl?

Yes, this is critical for proper adhesion. Before applying the vinyl, the surface must always be clean, dust-free, and thoroughly degreased to guarantee optimal and long-lasting adhesion.

How long will exterior vinyl lettering last, and is it easy to remove?
